Humane Society keeps me to it

By Ali*, on November 23, 2009

Yesterday I wrote about the merits of joining forces with other activists asĀ  well as doing our own things to improve the world.

Today I was reminded again.

Three years ago I pledged to do something every day to improve the lives of animals. Since that day I’ve been bombarded with opportunities and requests to get active on this calling. It’s been so constant and amazing I’ve never had to think about it.

Why did I make such a pledge? I saw Earthlings. I was already vegan and feeling pretty good about it but I knew there was more I could do to prevent… well, just watch Earthlings.

Today my promise looked like it was going to fold.

Why? Yesterday I stopped working in my vegan restaurant. I didn’t do anything for the organization I volunteer my web and writing for. Practical problems surrounded me like like brewing storms.

I was worried. “Will this be the end of a glorious three years?”

But then came an email from Humane Society asking me to write to the Nepalese government asking them to cancel a mass animal sacrifice.

I’ve had these mass email campaign in my inbox before and usually they get ‘marked as read’ without being read because I’m doing something else that seems a lot more urgent.

Today I appreciate it very much because I can stay true to my pledge for at least one more day. I also have a reason to start feeling good about a day that was full of mundane humane world worries.

And I have a blog post.

Call to Action

You can do this yourself too. They’ve made it easy- just fill out a form adding your details to a pre-written letter and send.

Ask Nepal to prevent animal cruelty during the Gadhimai Jatra festival

Under the form there’s a check-box for receiving future action alerts.

Well if that’s not easy peasy…
