Global Warming and the Leadership Conflict

By Ali*, on November 20, 2009

The political debates about global warming are heating up along with the science and the planet.

As the global warming impacts of today and tomorrow are realized our leaders are waking up to the challenge.

Their tasks seem daunting and their positions are conflicted.

Two roles are absolutely demanded of them by their constituency:

  • to help the world reach climate sustainability
  • to represent and if necessary defend the interests of their country.

If ordinary citizens feel disempowered – what about the poor governments of the world who are torn between apparently conflicting responsibilities and the knowledge that their actions will make or break a future for humantiy?.

They face pressure from within – the question “what if i fail?” . . .  “what if my actions create a worse future for humanity?”

They face even greater pressure from without: powerful industry lobbies; conspiracy theorists getting media attention; environmentalists who can just never get enough (let’s face it); and the chorus of people who won’t take responsibility for the future.

And to top it off, whichever way they move they are murdered in the press – because they can’t please everyone.

Thankfully there is a solution that bypasses a large portion of the conflict. It works because it doesn’t cost anything and it doesn’t hurt anyone.

A society-wide shift to the plant-based diet!

It will

  • remove a large part of the physical burden of global warming, perhaps alleviating more than 51% of the warming (according to a recent Worldwatch Magazine analysis)
  • reduce 80% of the cost of dealing with global warming – according to a Netherlands study.
